This is tragic since Albertsons has been my favorite grocery store to shop at in my hometown of Albany, OR. This is the second grocery store to close her in Albany OR in the last 2 months. Please read and let me know what you think. Andrrew
The Albany Albertsons grocery store, 1177 Waverly Drive S.E., will close on Feb. 20, according to Dennis McCoy, communications and public affairs manager for Albertsons LLC.
McCoy said the action was being taken because the store was unprofitable.
“We were just not able to impede the market place and move sales,” he said.
The company will shut seven of its 111 stores in the northwest, which include stores in Washington, Oregon and western Idaho.
The 68 employees at the Albany store were told Monday.
“There may be opportunities for the associates to move to another location,” McCoy said.
McCoy explained that Albertsons is constantly evaluating its fleet of stores to figure out which stores need remodels, improvements or which stores need to be closed.
“We are committed to the Northwest,” McCoy said. “Sometimes we just have to make the tough decision to shut down the store.”
The 32,000-foot store opened in 1982. Albertsons owns the building and will look for a new owner or tenant, according to McCoy. He said there are no buyers at this time.
